The Description: Being the self-centered humans we are, we simply cannot miss a chance to reflect upon ourselves - even when surrounded by nature. These three site specific pieces are just that; The natural human desire to create something with meaning, to leave something behind. Oysters with more complicated pearls.
≪Slanting ears of rice≫
Sung Nam HAN / 5 yen coins, magnets / 2024 / Japan
I made sculptures of the Albino Hoya (Korean common sea squirt) with a 5 yen coin buried in it and displayed it in inside the Ryori fishing port in Sanriku area. I thought that if the ascidians fell off and went missing, and were dug up years or centuries later, people in the future would wonder what the 5 yen coin had been in them and why the sea squirt sculptures had been there. (But luckily only one fell out.)
For this exhibition, the 5 yen coin and the magnet that holds it in place will be displayed underwater. This is an attempt to change the magnetic field in the sea as much as possible. The magnetic field of the earth is said to be decreasing. It is said to have decreased by about 10% over the past 100 years or so. Will people someday speculate a large amount of magnets into the sea? This sculpture is also inspired by the connection between the shells used as currency in ancient times and the fact that they are born in the sea and the monetary system, the electric power evoked by the word “magnetic field”, and the ‘rice hoarding’ scandal that occurred in Japan in the summer of 2024.
On September 22 (Sun) and 23 (Mon), we will host a two-day beach entry snorkel event open to all ages 12 and older.
During the exhibition period, contemporary artworks that can only be viewed by boat entry snorkeling or diving will be available for a special two-day event, where visitors can easily swim from the beach to view them. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis and will be closed when capacity is reached.
No participation fee
Museum admission fee: 1000 yen

*The purpose of this event is to explain the artwork on land and teach the location of the artwork, not to teach or guide snorkelers. Any accidents or injuries that occur during participation are the sole responsibility of the customer.
