≪At The Habitat≫
Inhan Cho / digital / 13min. / 2022 / Korea

Habitat is a place where living things settle and live, including environmental conditions and both biotic and abiotic factors. The natural creation of habitats is thus tricky. Here are two animals the size of a coin. They face forced translocation by another species- human. Because of this, the road they used to go was blocked and there are deep traps everywhere. Move carefully using all their senses, but can they avoid these traps?

≪Gap/Seam≫
Jun Yuan Hong / digital / 14min. 32sec. / 2021 / Taiwan

There are all kinds of gaps and seams in the prison environment, be it crevices and door seams towards the outside of prison cells or gaps and openings created by cell window bars. They constituted the everyday landscape in the eyes of political prisoners. However, phonetically speaking, the meaning of the Mandarin character “縫” is twofold: when pronounced in the fourth tone, the character denotes crevices, openings or gaps; but when pronounced in the second tone, it is used as a verb that means “mending” or “sewing.” The work is based on such a contronymic concept to respond to the contradictory relationship between the political prisoners in White Terror and the state power.

Hong films the process of a political prisoner’s failed jailbreak. After a tortuous, oppressive and suffering journey, as he gazes into the sea at the exit, the escape eventually becomes a self-contradictory exhaustion. In addition, memories of Tu Nan-Shan, a White Terror victim who was imprisoned on Green Island, are interwoven with the political imprisonment of Lin Bi, the great-great-grandfather of actor Sing-Ho Yeung, overlapping life stories and metaphorical narratives from different eras.

≪Mono≫ VR Movies
Tuan Mu / digital / 6min. / 2023 / Taiwan

In 2023, the artist conducted an artist-in-residence research program in Yamanashi, Japan. The artist discovered that rocks are not only seen as products of crustal movement, but also as objects of worship in shrines.

Based on this research, the artist engaged in a dialogue with the local culture through virtual technology under the concept of Mono (meaning “things” and “objects” in Japanese). The thin paper doors in washitsu separates the inside and outside, symbolizing the subtle boundary between natural and artificial spaces. Using mixed reality and hand tracking, the artwork guides the audience through a unique spatial experience, exploring the borders between reality and virtuality, materiality and spirituality, and divinity and worldliness. Through this experience, the artwork aims to prompt the audience to consider: “Can virtual space serve as a container for the deities?” and “If so, in what form would it manifest?”
